For more than a thousand years, Masino Castle has overlooked the immense Canavese plain from high ground in front of the evocative morainic barrier of the Serra di Ivrea – an intact and seemingly endless landscape. The strategic location of the castle resulted in it being frequently attacked, but the noble Valperga dynasty – whom, legend has it, are descended from Arduin of Ivrea, the first King of Italy–retained ownership of it right from the very beginning, documented as far back as 1070. The construction of this Hunting Lodge began in 1729 on a project by architect Filippo Juvarra and continued until the end of the 18th century with expansion and completion interventions by Benedetto Alfieri and other important architects of the times. This palace was a place of leisure and hunting for the Savoy court, used also as a sumptuous and refined residence for parties and weddings, as well as the residence chosen by Napoleon in the early 1800s and Queen Margherita in the early 1900s.
