Full description
Embark on a private trip from San José to the Poás Volcano National Park and Sarchi. Visit an active volcano and hike on a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon. Continue to the town of Sarchi, famed all over Costa Rica for its intricately constructed handicrafts. Meet your guide in your hotel lobby. Hop on an air-conditioned vehicle for a drive along scenic roads. Enjoy the countryside drive, passing by dairy farms, tropical flower nurseries, strawberry plantations, and cheese factories. Try a Prestiño, a tin pastry topped with a special syrup made in the local sugar mills. Upon your arrival at the National Park, climb up the crater accompanied by a park ranger. There are 2 crater lakes near the summit. The northern lake of Laguna Caliente is one of the world's most acidic lakes. The southern Lake Botos fills an inactive crater, making for a cool cloud forest. Proceed to the birthplace of Costa Rican oxcart handicrafts, Sarchi. A national symbol of Costa Rica, the oxcart is a symbol of the country. Oxarts were used to transport coffee beans and goods to markets and ports, and continue to be a part of local celebrations and parades to date. See ornate and elegantly carved oxcarts in Sarchi. The painting of the ox cart is a Costa Rican tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Sarchi is home to the largest and oldest oxcart factory, the Joaquin Chaverri Oxcart Factory was built in 1902. Walk around town to explore local stores selling wooden utensils, jewelry, souvenirs, and masks. Stop for a delicious lunch on the way. Shop for authentic souvenirs to take home memories of your trip with you.
