Full description
Set off on a 3-hour whale-watching excursion to see some of the most magnificent marine mammals in the Azores. You’ll be on the lookout for mink whales, dolphins, turtles and more. The marine biologist on board will provide historical information and commentary. Begin with a briefing by a biologist, who will explain how local people have converted whale hunting to whale watching in the Azores. You’ll also receive information about safety, rules of observation and respect for the animals and an overview of what may be sighted during the tour. Leaving from the Ponta Delgada harbor, you’ll sail in style out onto the Atlantic. Qualified biologists and nature guides will provide detailed explanations and collect scientific data during the tour. Situated in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and North America, the Azores are a permanent home or point of passage for more than a third of the world’s whale and dolphin species. Sperm whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins are present around the Archipelago of the Azores throughout the year. Other species visit or pass by during specific seasons so that the sightings vary considerably during the year — and often from day to day! Summer months are the best time to see Atlantic spotted dolphins, pilot whales and striped dolphins, whereas the spring months are the time to see migrating baleen whales such as blue whales, fin whales and sei whales. Although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during the tours, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life.

A wonderful trip 8/5/22. We saw a Humpback Whale, enjoyed the joyful company of a large pod of Bottle Nosed Dolphins - and to finish - we saw a single Blue Whale in close quarters to us and then there were two Blue Whales. We were able to observe without changing the behaviours of the Whales or Dolphins. The skipper kept trying to find the animals the whole trip, in partnership with the spotters on land. An experience I shall remember for the rest of my life.

We enjoyed our whaletour with Futurismo very much. The staff were very friendly and could tell a lot about the dolphins we saw. Unfortunately we didn’t see any whales, but we saw 2 kind of dolphins, very close to the boat. They were within less than 1 meter of the boat. The water was so clear we could see the dolphins swimming beneath the watersurface, which was really amazing to see. Although the see was pretty calm, we suffered of sea sickness a lot. The staff supported us with bags and tissues and gave advise what to do best. Because we didn’t see any whales, we did a second tour on a small boat (rib). On the small boat we didn’t get sick, so if you’re prone to seasickness, my advise would be to go on a small boat, and not the catamaran.

Didn’t see any whales but that’s not something the crew has any control over. Crew members did their best to make it an enjoyable and informative experience. Queueing after booking online for another ticket (not that it was even obvious, we had to find someone to ask and several people were sent back) and the hectic boarding process detracted from the experience.
