Full description
Set off on a 3-hour whale-watching excursion to see some of the most magnificent marine mammals in the Azores. You’ll be on the lookout for mink whales, dolphins, turtles and more. The marine biologist on board will provide historical information and commentary. Begin with a briefing by a biologist, who will explain how local people have converted whale hunting to whale watching in the Azores. You’ll also receive information about safety, rules of observation and respect for the animals and an overview of what may be sighted during the tour. Leaving from the Ponta Delgada harbor, you’ll sail in style out onto the Atlantic. Qualified biologists and nature guides will provide detailed explanations and collect scientific data during the tour. Situated in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and North America, the Azores are a permanent home or point of passage for more than a third of the world’s whale and dolphin species. Sperm whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins are present around the Archipelago of the Azores throughout the year. Other species visit or pass by during specific seasons so that the sightings vary considerably during the year — and often from day to day! Summer months are the best time to see Atlantic spotted dolphins, pilot whales and striped dolphins, whereas the spring months are the time to see migrating baleen whales such as blue whales, fin whales and sei whales. Although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during the tours, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life.

We saw four whales and one was logging and stayed in the same space for a fat minute. Then we saw a large female whale and then two more go to her. Then we another one far away. As we were going closer to one whale we saw a shark! It swam away pretty fast because we startled it a bit but we were also surprised to see it. Then we saw so many dolphins and they ended up surrounding the boat as we road next to them. Some would go back and forth on either side of the boat. It was the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life. There were lots of Portuguese man of war jellyfish out there also.

Personally, I didn't like this experience. Hours of sea to spot some dolphin backs and the puff of air of a whale. The price of 60 euros is not justified. I leave 5 stars for the commitment and professionalism of the staff and for respect for those who are passionate about this kind of trips.

Very enriching and pleasant experience! Quite knowledgeable and attentive wildlife guides. We managed to see two baleias (sperm whales) and many golfinhos not total of three species (common, roaz and risso). We opted for a catamaran or that is possibly more pleasant for people who are more idosa or anxious but if you want a little adrenaline escolhe or speed boat.
