Full description
You’ll be picked up at your Prague hotel at 08:45 and head out on a 45-minute drive through the landscape of central Bohemia on this full-day private tour. When you arrive at Konopiště Chateau you’ll take a tour of the residence of the successor to the emperor of Austria-Hungary, who was assassinated in 1914 in Sarajevo, marking the beginning of WWI. The construction of Konopiště Chateau began in 1294, and in the 18th century, it was refashioned into a Baroque residence. In 1887 Franz Ferdinand d’Este purchased the chateau, and the surrounding area was transformed into a landscaped park. In 1921 the chateau changed hands yet again and became the property of the state and it was opened to the public. Explore the interior and the gardens as well. Afterwards you’ll explore the town of Nový Knín, known for gold mining and a permanent settlement that dates back to the 9th century. The estimated yield of the mines is around 1 kilogram of gold per ton of rock. One of the last attempts to restore the mines was at the end of the WWII. Visit the gold museum that chronicles the town’s history. The museum is located in the historical mint building, and its exhibits focus on the history of the mining and refining of gold. Afterwards you’ll continue on to the town of Karlštejn, where you’ll ride a horse-drawn carriage to the castle. Enjoy lunch at the U Adama restaurant, choosing from a variety of traditional Czech dishes. The construction of Karlštejn Castle began in 1355, ordered by Charles IV for the protection of the crown jewels and imperial insignia. It was completed in 1365, and owes it current appearance to puristic renovations from 1887-1889.
