From Avignon: Châteauneuf du Pape Afternoon Wine Tour

1. From Avignon: Châteauneuf du Pape Afternoon Wine Tour

Tucked between the Alps to the east and the Rhone River to the west, Provence is a rich tapestry of natural and manmade wonders. On this tour departing Avignon, you will combine a tour of its Roman heritage with a trip to the famous vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  Start your afternoon wine-tasting tour with the village of Gigondas. Located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail hill range, the vineyard covers an area of 12 km² and the wines produced belong to the Crus of the southern Côtes du Rhône.  The Grenache noir expresses its full flavor in glimmering red wines with pronounced tannins, a robust body, and a solid propensity for aging. Afterward, stop at the ruins of the castle built by the former Popes who relocated the papacy to Avignon in the 14th-Century and used it as their summer residence. Then drive to the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the world’s most popular wines. Discover the different grape varietals, such as Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, which give distinctly fruity and spicy wines.  The 13 varieties of grapes combined with the various soils create a large palette of complex red wines and elegant white wines. Enjoy a wine-tasting in one of the numerous cellars of the village before going back to Avignon.

Meet the winemakers, and taste AOC Côtes de Provence wines in 3 colors - tasty, full-bodied reds of excellent structure, subtle, elegant rosés, and whites of distinction.

This was an excellent day our, right from the point we met Eric. The tour pick up point was accurate and on time. The guide certainly knows his wine and provided a steady narrative with some great insights to the wine making process in southern France. We visited 3 different wineries with approximately 4 wines per visit. There is no hard sell (or even a soft sell) so no pressure to buy anything. Hosts were all knowledgeable and polite and keen to show off their own products. As some of the group were staying in Cassis anyway, the itinerary was amended to suit everybody and allow different drop off points. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a great day trip around the local area.

Our guide Angi was a real sweetheart. She knew the area well and was not afraid to talk and explain things well during the tour. She constantly made sure that everyone was well looked after. The pace of the tour was well managed and everyone was able to easily keep up. What was a bit more difficult to do is to keep up with all the food and drinks that were served. If you go on this tour, make sure to arrive hungry. As for us we ended up skipping dinner afterwards. Thanks Angi, your tour was one of the best tour of our trip.

We loved our trip to Cassis with Lucielle! She was incredibly knowledgable and showed us all the sights we wouldn’t of thought to go too. It was a fun day with a super fun group! Would recommend 10/10

Very nice guide with great knowledge about Nice. He took us around to several great restaurants. The food was very good. Recommended.

My tour guide (Lucille) was AMAZING. I am already planning my trip to come back!
