Ravenna: UNESCO Monuments and Mosaics Guided Tour

2. Ravenna: UNESCO Monuments and Mosaics Guided Tour

Starting from the convenient meeting point in Piazza San Francesco, journey through the streets of the city center with your guide to experience five incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Neonian Baptistery, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of San Vitale, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the Chapel of Saint Andrew. You will have the opportunity to visit: The Basilica of San Vitale: one of the most important monuments of early Christian art in Italy. When you enter the basilica, your gaze is captured by the high spaces, the wonderful mosaic decorations of the apse and the extraordinary representation of the imperial couple of Byzantium: Justinian and Theodora, with their procession. The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo: originally used as a Palatine Church of Arianism, today it allows us to reconstruct the evolution of Byzantine wall mosaics from the age of Theodoric to that of Justinian. The Chapel of Saint Andrew: representing the glorification of Christ in an anti-Arian key, it is the only example of an early Christian archiepiscopal chapel still intact today. The Neonian Baptistery: one of the oldest monuments of the city, made of simple brick on the outside but rich in marble, stucco, and mosaics of clear Hellenistic-Roman influence inside. The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia: it was built around the middle of the 5th century, at the behest of Galla Placidia, who ruled the Western Roman Empire. The innumerable stars of the dome have struck the imagination and sensitivity of visitors over the centuries, and of outstanding personalities such as the great poet Dante Alighieri, who drew inspiration from them for the writing of some verses of the Divine Comedy.

7. Ravenna: Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe Private Tour

This 1-hour private tour of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe will allow you to discover one real hidden gem of Ravenna (and of the whole of Italy). Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been described as the most impressive basilica of the early Christian period. Despite the plundering it suffered over the centuries, the basilica has preserved the splendor of its original building. It is now admired for its beautiful polychrome apse mosaics and ancient marble sarcophagi of archbishops placed along the aisles. This impressive church rises in all its solemn grandeur at a distance of 8 kilometres from the centre of Ravenna. Commissioned by the archbishop Ursicino, the church was built by Julian Argentarius during the first half of the 6th century on an ancient burial area used in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. Apparently, Saint Apollinaris - one of the first bishops of Ravenna - was buried here.

The special thing about our tour besides the incredible sites was our tour guide Jade. She was lovely and was very attentive to our group. We had an elderly couple, myself with husband and 4 year old child, and one you g gentlemen…. All from different countries. She didn’t rush us and entertained all of our questions. She and our lovely group made a most pleasant experience.

Our guide Marco was excellent. He highlighted things putting them into historical perspective without going on endlessly with too much detail. It was wonderful to be able to see all 5 places in one sitting (so to speak). It does include a good amount of walking and moving along, not sauntering.

Our tour guide was excellent. The sites are breathtaking, and we were given sufficient amount of time to view them. The walking from site to site is easy (when it’s not in the 90’s) and our guide pointed out many landmarks along the way.

My teenage daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The mosaics are truly magnificent and the guide very knowledgeable. A highlight of our trip to the region!

An excellent walk through Ravenna with a very knowledgeable guide to see the many beautiful mosaics!
