We really wanted to hike the Samaria Gorge and were glad we were able to do it on 10/29, the day before the last day for this year. The experience was exhilarating. It was a 'must do' and we don't regret it. However, it was far more difficult than we anticipated, despite being warned by reviews and by our guide at the start. The beginning is an extremely long period of walking down steep steps and paths. This part does not end soon. You are walking on rocks, many of which move under your feet. It is very easy to slip and fall. I would highly recommend walking sticks. Our guide had them; we did not. We loved the scenery, wildlife, views, etc. - spectacular. Our guide told us all that he would remain behind the last person for the whole hike to make sure everyone was ok. He DID NOT DO THIS. We fell into the last position about 90 min. before the end. He walked past us and was sitting in a cafe at the bottom (outside the gate) when we finally got to the end. That was disappointing.
Overall really enjoyed the experience and thought it was great value for the price! The beginning of the hike was a little hectic as two bus loads of people entered the trail at once (where it's very narrow and slippery), but after about 20 minutes of walking people started to spread out and walk at various paces. It took my group about 3.5 hours to complete the trail, we walked at a brisk pace and only stopped once for 15 minutes to eat our lunch. We really enjoyed the beautiful scenery and quiet (not as many visitors in October). Once we reached the end, we walked through the town to get to the beach and enjoyed a couple of hours there in the sun.
Everything was organised very well. We were picked up from near where we stayed and driven to the start of the gorge. Had to buy our own tickets. Make sure you have cash before you leave because the ticket office only accepts cash and there's no ATM anywhere there. Also make sure you have water because, unlike Samaria gorge, there is no water anywhere inside. You can wait at a tavern on the other side for your bus which will take you to the sea. We only had about an hour to get to the beach, swim, change and come back but it was enough. The bus then took us all home. Great experience!
Our most challenging excursion, what an adventure, a great experience and achievement, we were all impressed with ourselves at the end with over 6 hours of walking over 30,000 steps on very rocky ground and steep hills up and down, walked across water on a rickety bridge. Am still suffering with some aches and pains on my thighs and calves Well organised will recommend to others for sure
