Fun fact about Hvalfjörður, during World War II, a naval base of the British and American navies was in this fjord. It also used to be the main road between Reykjavík and Borgarnes – until 1998, when a tunnel was built under the ocean to shorten the trip considerably. With little less than an hour drive from Reykjavík, Hvammsvík hot springs were opened to the public in 2022 and was recently named the Number 1 best thing to do in the world in 2023 by Timeout Magazine.
