Journey by bus from Reykjavik to the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel about 30 minutes from the capital. Upon arrival, explore one of the largest lava tubes in Iceland, where the ceiling has caved in near the entrance to create beautiful columns of light.

Marvel at the fantastic range of colors in the tunnel wall caused by different mineral types in the rock. Go on a sensory journey as you hear the cave "talk" and feel the forces of nature like never before.

We enjoyed this tour. The guide in the cave was friendly and knowledgeable, mixing interesting facts about the geology with humor. We appreciated the safety equipment (crampons for traction on the wet, slippery cave floor and a helmet with built-in flashlight). We were rushed by our bus driver, though, who insisted we return to the bus immediately after the tour because he had to make other routes, despite the tour guide's suggestion that we linger in the cave for photos. We had zero minutes to do that because of the bus driver. (He did seem to drive safely in winter conditions, though.) Visitors walk partly on steel walkways and partly on wet, uneven stones. Persons with mobility issues might struggle a bit. No canes or walkers allowed. Other than the small opening, the cave itself is pretty big, so persons with mild claustrophobia might be o.k. here.

We had an evening flight home so wanted to do something short and sweet on the last day so booked onto the short Lava Tunnel trip. The shorter trip was a brilliant and informative Introduction to the cave and the tour guide was fantastic. A great trip to finish off our holiday in Iceland

Absolutely fascinating tour inside a beautiful cave! The guide shared lots of fascinating insights into the history and formation of the cave with plenty of stops along the route for information and photos. All the instructions and directions were clear to follow. The path was very uneven underfoot at times but well worth navigating to see the spectacular cave. The transfers from Reykjavik BSI were very easy to locate too,
