It was a great experience and the volcano is spectacular. However, be aware that this is a long 1.5 - 2 hrs hike with moderate difficulty and possibly windy and rainy weather, especially at night when it is pitch black. The hike goes through a number of uphill parts and a very long field full of stones you need to navigate around. Prepare appropriately with proper wear and shoes. But there is a prize at the end. Then you hike back. :)

This hike is difficult. You will be able to do it if you have hiking experience but if you are inexperienced you will be the ones holding up the bus on the way back. Especially if you are doing the evening hike, be prepared to wait until 2am for the stragglers to come back. Amazing experience regardless, wish the guides wouldn’t talk so loud as we were trying to sleep when we got back on the bus at 1am.

Once in a lifetime experience! Even though the hike is considered “moderate” the rocky terrain along with a few steep hills and mud (esp during the dark night hike) might be challenging for some. Be prepared for it taking a bit longer to leave the hike as some hikers may take an extra hour or two to return to the bus. Wear waterproof gear and and bring extra layers if needed. Wear proper hiking boots (waterproof ideal but not totally necessary). It’s easy to trip so pay attention as you hike. The headlamps the tour provides are essential and helpful. I didn’t use poles but those seemed to be helpful for many so I might do that next time. So rewarding! The orange vests helped. As a solo traveler I wanted to make sure I was around people in my group. This is not a casual hike. If you don’t have good night vision consider the day tour. Really incredible. Our bus driver (I didn’t catch his name) airdropped us his incredible photos and a link to the hiking trail. Thanks Victor & Mark!
