Full description

Enjoy an afternoon or evening hike in Geldingadalur Valley, where eruptions over the past two years have transformed the landscape. Learn about the history of volcanoes in the area as well as an introduction to the underlying science from your expert guide.

Get picked up in Reykjavík and set out on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views towards the Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Meradalir, and Geldingadallur Valley.

Once at the valley, put on your hiking gear and head towards the volcano to hopefully see some lava flowing. The eruption has stopped in recent days, but there was flowing lava here as recently as August 20th, 2022. Bring snacks along with you and enjoy them while you gaze upon this natural wonder.

Afterward, as you drive along the peninsula, your guide will fill you in on the history of volcanos in the area, many long-dormant, now covered by soft green lava moss.

First of all: Our vacation was at the end of July 2022. We had originally booked this hike, the day before we were told that the booked pick-up time was not possible. We were offered a free upgrade to the "Volcano Hike & Geothermal Wonders" tour (full-day tour), which we accepted. The rebooking was quick and uncomplicated, our questions about the new tour were answered very quickly and courteously. As a result, I can only rate the upgraded tour, which was really great: volcano hike with great views, good restaurant for lunch (optional, not included in the price) and sights of the Reykjanes Peninsula, including the Krýsuvík geothermal area and the bridge between the two continental plates . The tour and our guide Josip are recommended. Only the time at the sights was often very short, it was enough for taking photos, but more was not possible due to the number of sights.

Organized at very short notice. Good vibes on the bus. It was probably demanded with too little emphasis that one should be on the bus as punctually as possible. Waiting over an hour for the last guests requires a lot of patience. Nevertheless, respect that the bus has waited so long.

The pick-up was reliable, but several hotels were approached. The leadership was good. But you only had brief contact with the guide, because the field naturally pulled apart. The first half of the trail is of medium difficulty, but then it becomes more difficult due to a boulder field with large stones. Sturdy walking shoes are a must! The experience at the volcano is unique! Before returning we had to wait 45 minutes for 3 people who were already on the second bus. The right overview is probably missing?! Total duration: 6:30 p.m. - 2:45 a.m
