Our guide loves the Vatican and has made it her mission to help tourists explore all of its most famous artwork as well as the back story and details you couldn’t get any other way. Elaine ensured that our group was at the front of the early entry line so we had the Vatican museum almost to ourselves.

We did the early morning tour of the Vatican, led by Mario of What a Life Tours. There are many Vatican tours to choose from, and this one fit the bill as we did not want to be at the Vatican while it was too crowded. After a quick croissant and coffee, we headed to the Vatican (quite close to the tour office) and Mario gave us an introduction. He was a musical theater major, and intersperses these talents into his timing. He is also quite an expert on art and Roman history, and while not native to Rome, is now a resident and his admiration for the art and culture are evident. We saw several of the gallery rooms leading to the Sistine Chapel (although no time to admire many of the contemporary pieces), the Chapel itself and the Basilica. The artwork and grandeur of the Vatican cannot be rivaled. The Basilica was especially impressive because although massive there was still a warmth to it. Highly recommend this tour and company.

The Sistine Chapel was absolutely amazing and was easily our favorite part of the tour. 30 minutes there went by in no time. The museums were interesting as well, but we felt like our guide was stopping us to spend time on some of the mundane pieces and ignored a few of the more interesting pieces and rooms entirely. Overall, we enjoyed our tour, but if we did it over again, would probably opt for skip the line tickets and an audio tour so we could spend our time where we wanted.
