It was a fun experience. I found I was the only one who had booked the class at that time slot. So lucky me got a one on one tour and lesson and extra attention. I learned about the different gladiators and equipment that they would use. Not sure if it’s normal but I got to try different helmets on? That was cool. Beside learning about the gladiators I learned about the Roman soldiers also. I was taught training and how to fight and defend. I got to practice these moves with the instructor before heading to the arena for the real battle.

Excellent activity for children, but beware: you are made to put your belongings in unsupervised places (especially when we were filming the children in action) and despite the low number of visitors to the place and the good-natured atmosphere, someone searched in my bag and stole my cash!!! So beware!!!

A major highlight of our family’s time in Rome! Our gladiatrix instructor (I believe her name was Flamma) was smart and fierce and amazing and our boys (almost 12 and 8) had a blast. Our group was 7 kids (4 boys, 3 girls), starting around age 6 or 7, and everyone was totally engaged for the two hours. The school is on the Appian Way, one of the Roman Empire’s oldest and most important roads—a bit off the beaten path but really interesting to see. While you’re out there, the Catacombs are just a couple minutes away by taxi and we also had a wonderful lunch at Hostaria Antica Roma, on their terrace in the shadow of an ancient mausoleum.
