Full description

Embark on a walking tour through the former Jewish ghetto of Rome which was established in 1555 on the banks of the Tiber River. Learn about how the ghetto was essentially a prison neighborhood within Rome, surrounded by fences and gates. As you stroll through the streets, and discover how it was considered unacceptable for Jews to live together with Christians, Pope Paul IV Carafa promulgated a series of restrictions on the Jewish community such as would marginalize it for centuries. See how the former ghetto quarter represents the uninterrupted relationship between Jews and the city of Rome. See the Great Synagogue that was inaugurated in 1904, a symbol of the emancipation achieved by Roman Jews after the abolition of the ghetto.

If you wish to see the monumental complex of the Great Synagogue from inside, tickets are available for purchase on-site.

The tour was very educational. Seen many beautiful buildings and places, where our guide Michael was able to tell the stories in a fun way and to keep your attention. Highly recommended. Michael was very friendly, spontaneous and managed to create the right balance with telling about the history of the Jewish quarter and good humor.

A nice tour, in a great area of Rome. Many thanks again to Veronica, she made the tour exciting and fun with a lot of heart and knowledge. We were also very happy that the tour was not canceled even though there were only two of us. Thanks very much!

We went as a couple. We decided to do this tour to know something different about Rome beyond the places that are commonly visited such as the Colosseum, Vatican etc. In short, WE LOVED IT. Our guide Fabio very close and very very friendly. He also knew perfectly all the history of the Jewish quarter. 100% recommendable!!!
