Full description
You tour will begin in the Gallery of Paintings where you will see wonderful masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano and more. From there you will head to the Carriage Pavilion that houses the various vehicles used by the Popes over the years. You’ll see the Gran Gala Berlin, which was made in Rome in 1826 for Pope Leo XII; the world-famous Fiat Campagnola, the car in which Pope John Paul II was standing on the day of his assassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square in 1981; the three Popemobiles (Land Rover, Toyota and Mercedes 230 GE), and the Renault 4 which was donated to Pope Francis in 2013. You will then pass through the Cortile della Pigna, known as the Courtyard of the Pine Cone, before progressing onto the recently re-opened to the public New Wing. It was first opened in 1822 to display the artworks confiscated by Napoleon, and was returned from France following his defeat. It is now home to a large collection of ancient statues. The last stop of your tour will be to see the magnificent Sistine Chapel, where you can marvel at the many frescoes of Michelangelo and enjoy the silence as you soak in the ambience.
