After pickup at 6:00 AM at your hotel in Antigua Guatemala or Guatemala City, take a 3-hour journey towards Atitlán Lake. Your first stop will be a viewpoint with impressive panoramic views over Sololá Department, the volcanoes, and the lake. From Panajachel, one of the 11 Mayan villages, take a 20-minute boat trip across the lake towards San Juan La Laguna. Once you debark, stroll along the “handicrafts” street, which includes chocolate and medicinal plant stores, textile factories, art galleries, and souvenir shopping. You have a full day to explore San Juan, the “Swiss village” of Lake Atitlan. You will spend approximately 5 hours on a guided walking tour where you learn about the unique changes that have transformed this Tzutujile Mayan village into a model community. Visit art galleries, woman's weaving cooperatives, a medicinal and curative plant garden operated by the comedrones (mid-wifes), a coffee tour, the school and library, confradia shrines, and even the mayor’s office. You will meet several families, visit with them about how their lives have changed through experiential tourism. See a traditional children’s dance performance, and learn about the story behind the dance.
