Full description

Travel to the charming village of Aracena from Seville and visit the biosphere reserve of Dehesas de Sierra Morena. Discover an area so unique that Nasa has a base to study it on this day trip to the Rio Tinto mining area.

Hop aboard an air-conditioned vehicle and relax on the drive to the biosphere reserve of Dehesas de Sierra Morena. The reserve offers you the chance to see some of the bulls and Iberian pigs which inhabit the area.

Have the chance to visit a farm of wild bulls. Explore the Rio Tinto, an area that has been exploited for copper, silver, and gold for over 2000 years. See how this activity has changed the landscape of this area so much that it now resembles Mars.

Uncover how the main river here runs through old mining fields, transporting metallic minerals which turn the river into a reddish color when it combines with its mildly acidic waters, making life in the river nearly impossible.

Head to Aracena, a small town located in the middle of Sierra Morena. This is the capital city of the Natural Park Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche. Aracena has trails through its Dehesas which are full of cork trees, oaks, and free-roaming Iberian pigs.

Visit the Grutas de las Maravillas, a natural cave almost 2000 meters long, full of stalactites and stalagmites formed by the water running in the limestone. Stroll through the cave and marvel at the fascinating rock formations and deep blue water. Next, take in views of the rural Mosque of Almonaster la Real.

The trip was well organized and comfortable. Guide suggested a minor change in itinerary due to the weather and it was a right call. I was happy with the itinerary - perhaps I would add a bit more of Riotinto hike. The guide was unobtrusive, did not overload us with information, yet was approachable and always able to provide a lot of details when asked.

The activity wasn't as describe..... We visit the Rio Tinto mine ( old and active) but not the museum....the guide didn't comment enough the situation. We saw the old part of the city where manager lived ( nice). We went to an old church ( but it was close!) When we arrives at the Iberic Ham Museum it was closed! By chance, at lunch time my son and I walk around Aracena ( very nice town with a lot of art all around), we went in a little grocery and the lady give us good advises....good lunch at Serrena and nice souvenir ( crook, orange wine etc) . The cave was fabulous but no visit of the museum before or the touristic office where they describe the site. It was a good day but because of the people of the city.....

Great excursion! Something really special, both what you get to see and partly because of the guide. We have seen bulls, iberian pigs, the rio tinto (incredible), the mines and the nasa research area (very impressive), the caves of aracena (the most beautiful caves we have ever seen), the castle of arecena and the area where cork trees to grow. The explanation of the guide was great!!!! Thank you Carlos and David from Naturanda!!!!
