Immerse yourself in the ancient history of the Samurai at the Samurai Museum in Shinjuku, near Kabukicho. Enjoy a small-group tour of the museum with the official English-speaking guide who will tell you the story and history behind an array of fascinating artifacts including a real collection of Samurai swords and armor. Start the tour by admiring 9 pieces of authentic Samurai armor that are between 200-400 years old. See various kinds of artifacts actual Samurai used, ranging from weaponry to matchlocks. Then, your expert guide will take you through each floor and room of the museum, providing explanations that give you a deeper understanding of Samurai history. The tour runs every 15-20 minutes and lasts about 1 hour. At the end of the tour, enjoy the opportunity to dress up like a Samurai General or a Princess in a kimono, and take photos with the colorful and decorative costumes. Finally, watch an exciting sword fighting show performed by professional actors, which takes place at several points in the afternoon daily. Our guide Rio was charming, informative and had a lovely sense of humor. The museum exhibits were fascinating and the Samurai “fight” was entertaining. The visit was topped off with the opportunity to dress in Samurai outfits and ladies traditional outfits to take some pictures. I would highly recommend a visit to the Shinjuku Samurai Museum!

Recommended for those who wanted to know a bit of history on Samurai and to get a close up look of the Samurai armors. We arrived there 10 minutes before 4pm just to catch the Samurai show at 4pm (stated in the details). But when we got there, there was actually a group tour (for an hour) at certain times. Ours started 4:20pm, so with a lot of time to spare, we went crazy shopping for souvenirs at the shop which conveniently located at the waiting area. So basically it is not a museum that you can roam around freely at your leisure time. But you can still exit during the tour (that was what we did because we had another booked show just around the area). To be honest, we really wanted to finish the tour but because we were a bit confused in the details so we were unable to manage our time. The Samurai show is included in the tour. And the tour guides are so friendly! Enjoyable tour.

Very informative, with a collection spanning all Samurai eras, yet not that time consuming. So perfect for a tight Tokyo visiting schedule.
