We were picked up at 10.30am by Roberto, our tour guide. As we sped along in his battered Ford he explained about the lava, it's use in building and architecture,it's fertile minerals, the importance of the sun,the wind, the rain and the old ways of making wine. We started with a small producer, meeting up with two other couples and their guides. We sampled a white, a rose and two reds, all generously poured, the perfumed white proved to be our favourite of the day. Next we went to a slightly bigger outfit where we sat down at tables and were given a light meal of foccacia, sun-dried tomatoes, aubergine pickled with celery, olives marinated with fennel, small slices of salami and cubes of cheese. Still only the three couples, we sampled a white, a rose, two reds and a red dessert wine. Lastly we went to the Gambino estate, the panoramic view was simply stunning.Pleasantly full and slightly stupified we relaxed in the back of the Ford instead worrying about the cracked windscreen!
The tour guide Alexandria was great! She told different things along the way in Italian, English and German. We first went to Panarea, which was really nice. We had 2 hours to walk around and visited the prehistoric village. Next was de island Stromboli with the beautiful black beatches. Here we could walk around for about 3 hours. Our tour guide organised a little tour and showed us the highlights of the island. When we were on the boat again we went to the other site of the island and saw an amazing sunset and a lot of little errutions of the vulcano Stromboli. It was a really great day!
The boat was on the crowded side, but there was plenty of ventilation and the staff was vigilantly instructing guests to keep their masks in place. Time on each island and after dark to watch Stromboli do her stuff was just right. Unfortunately, only a little bit of eruption action to see, but that’s just how it goes sometimes.
It was an excellent day but could have been described with a little more detail. I was not aware that there was so much travelling to and from the listed destinations. For instance the 100 minutes on the bus each way to the ferry and the 2 hours each way ON the ferry.
Organization of trip very well. Guide in two languages. Only weather was not the best.
