Full description

Spend the day exploring 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites located outside of Sofia, Bulgaria's capital city. Begin by meeting with your local guide at behind St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia who is ready to make the best of your day, sharing historical facts and insider tips.

Sit back and relax for the next 2 hours as your English-speaking driver transportsyou to Rila. Upon arriving, spend 2 hours exploring the area and visiting the Rila Monastery, the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant that features a specialty of grilled trout.

Hop back in the van for another 2-hour journey, eventually arriving at Boyana Church, a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church on the outskirts of Sofia. Check out the elaborate frescoes that have made this site famous, before your tour returns you to your meeting point.

The Rila monastery is unique, the Boyana church is well worth visiting, as a complement it is fine, by itself, I would not visit it, the visit is very brief, they only let you spend 10 minutes inside. The very professional day, very attentive to any need of the group, very kind and friendly, something strange in Bulgaria.

the Rila Monastery is beautiful...coming to Sofia without seeing it would be a shame. The audio guide was helpful for non-English speakers but only in regards to visiting the monastery. As for the Boyana church, the audio guide did not have any audio available and for non-English speakers understanding the guide was not helpful. overall visit handled well.

Highly recommended, you can tell that Phillip is passionate about history, he tells everything with great enthusiasm and you can ask him all the questions or curiosities you have. When we have arrived at the meeting point, our guide Phillip has clearly explained the entire route and what we would do. After about 2 hours in a comfortable van and with a pleasant talk where Phillip has explained things to us about the city as we went through it, we arrived at the Rila monastery. After seeing him and telling us super interesting things about the Church, the monastery and its history, we headed to the cave of St. John. We have climbed about 20' along a very beautiful path and we have reached the cave and the point where St. John used to spend his days. Back in the car and after an hour and a half we arrived at the Boyana church, we paid 2 levas for being students and then 5 more among the whole group so that an archaeologist could explain the frescoes of the Church to us.
