Full description
Meet our guide at the Sorrento Train Station and embark on a 2-hour guided tour of Herculaneum. Skip the lines with privileged entrance access and discover this once thriving Roman resort town. Travel on the local train to Herculaneum and then join your professional guide for a 2-hour tour to discover this once thriving Roman resort town. Invaded with hot volcanic mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompei possessing an extraordinary density of fine houses with, for example, far more lavish use of colored marble cladding. The 20 mar deep pyroclastic material which invaded Herculaneum, preserved wooden and other organic-based objects and 300 skeletons were discovered along what was once the seashore (all artifacts are now in Naples Museum). Today, many ancient streets and buildings are visible, although over 75% of the Roman town remains buried under the modern towns of Ercolano and Portico.

Excellent

The guide Sasa was excellent very informative & helpful & asked everyone if they were enjoying the tour on several occasions so very caring , the only tricky bit was getting off at the right station as the train was very packed so the group had to split up but other than this it was outstanding .

Exceptional value and worthwhile

Had an amazing trip ,to start, the guide was brilliant, thank you Maria,to say she was professional in all aspects of her work, this trip was sadly not 100%suitable with a man with a prosthetic leg, this made an atmosphere having to tell them in their best interest it isn't suitable and she was also considering the remaining guests. My opinion of the site was amazing,be expected to squeeze into the returning train but easy to do and straight forward with Maria's guidance

Trip starts at Sorrento train station. There was someone waiting for us as arranged, checked our names off and gave us wrist bands for easy identification. Guide (Anna Luisa I think) bought our train tickets and showed us to the train. Small old train for locals and tourists- gets busy. Try to be early - 2 in our group arrived 5 mins before train so had to stand for the 1hr to Herculaneum. The guide told us when to get off (Ercalano) and guided us on 15 min walk down hill to the site. No queus at Hurculaneum, guide bought our tickets and in without queueing. The guide was excellent - clear, informative and interesting information all through the 2hrs plus walk round the buildings. Walking is on uneven cobble type stone with steps and high kerbs- wear sturdy footwear. Take water as there is no place to buy on the walk. Getting back is on your own. Two trains didnt arrive so very busy - stood most of way back to Sorrento. Would I recommend- definately- had a laugh about train.
