What people are saying about Soumela Monastery

Overall a good day out. The monastery was fantastic but we only had 90 minutes there which included the walking up and down to get there. It all felt very rushed. The entrance fee was worth it but there is still a lot of renovation work going on. Only got the fabulous outside view from the bus. The cave was spectacular. The restaurant for lunch was a bad choice. No one wanted a full sit down a la carte meal at lunchtime so everyone just stood around waiting for an hour. Would have been better to have had more time at the monastery. We stopped at a lovely restaurant for sutlac at the end of the day, and this would have made a great lunchtime venue with its fantastic views. The most disappointing aspect of the day was that we booked an English guide and our guide didn’t speak a single word of English so we were left pretty clueless all day as to what was happening, how long we had at each stop etc. Was the trip good value for money? Yes. Could it be improved upon? Absolutely.

The beautiful monastery, however I was a little disappointed because I thought we could see the whole monastery, however we could only see the part that is open, that is, the one that is not covered. Everything that is roofed cannot be seen. I don't know if it's because it's dangerous or because what you see on the outside is just a façade and what used to be inside no longer exists. There is also no way to photograph it from the outside as it appears on the internet, unless you have a drone and they let you take photos with it.

Guide and driver very good just gives you a brief talk then you go off on your own. The Monastry was good and definitely worth going to as was the caves Food at stop was nice but expensive probably the most I spent on a meal in the time I stayed in Istanbul Beautiful countryside and mountains to view

The tour was advertised as being in Arabic and English though my guide couldn’t speak English. Without the help of a lady on the tour that translated for me I wouldn’t have known where to be and at what time at each stop.

The activity was perfect, the guide spoke perfect English and he was super nice. La Cie also helped us a lot and she was super available for our questions. We recommend.
