Volcano Exhibition and Cinema - Lava Centre Iceland

1. Volcano Exhibition and Cinema - Lava Centre Iceland

Journey through the geological history of a nation as you explore the fiery heart of Iceland at awarded Lava Centre overlooking the great volcanoes of Eyjafjallajökull, Katla and Hekla. Learn by using interactive displays and videos. Become immersed in an experience that blends education with artistic displays of the various natural forces that created Iceland. Go to the Trembling Earth section and learn how diverging tectonic plate movements and rising magma cause frequent earthquakes. Experience the drama of a simulated earthquake. In front of the Fiery Heart of Iceland display, learn about the normal up-flow of magma at the diverging plate boundaries and how they interact with a mantle plume (hot spot) beneath Iceland, pin-pointed in the central highlands. Once the gaseous molten rock in the earth’s crust and mantle, known as magma, is expelled during a volcanic eruption, it is termed lava and tephra (airborne material). There are 30 volcanic systems in Iceland containing many types of volcanoes, with a strong impact on nature and the rapidly developing landscapes. In the Magma Learning Center, get an insight into many volcanic structures. Tephra forms when magma encounters water or ice, or if the gaseous magma is very viscous. The magma splinters into pieces of various sizes that may spread over large areas. Get a panoramic view of 4 large, active but dormant volcanoes and a group of volcanic islands in the Local Volcano section, or from the viewing deck. All are of a different type and nature, and two of them are among the most active and productive volcanoes in Iceland!

The tour was absolutely brilliant and I’m so glad I decided to do a 2-day one for the South Coast. This way, it was about 5 hours of driving each day, not 10 and we got to see more and didn’t have to rush at every stop. All the sights we visited were absolutely stunning and beautiful. We were super lucky with the weather, but I’m sure everything would be well worth it even in the rain. The glacier hike was amazing and our guide, Christina, made sure that everyone was safe and could participate. We could not have asked for a better guide! Christina was super fun and shared so much helpful and interesting information about Iceland with us. She also adjusted the order of the itinerary so we could avoid some crowds and make the best of the weather that was forecast. And she also made a few very nice and stunning extra stops that everyone loved, making sure we could really get the most out of our trip. I definitely strongly recommend this tour, especially with Christina as the guide!

The South Coast tour was the most enjoyable and beautiful experience of my 10-day trip to Iceland! And among all the tours I've been on, CHRISTINA is the best tour guide I've ever had! Christina kept a positive, enthusiastic attitude throughout the two days of the trip and brought positive energy to those around her. Very good at creating a lively atmosphere for everyone. Christina has great photo ideas and skills. I got so many awesome photos!! Also I really appreciate Christina's taste in music. I don't know how she found so much good music to suit the occasion perfectly. She also gave us a lot of useful advice and introduced a lot of history and stories about Iceland. An unforgettable experience!! I look forward to coming back to Iceland soon!

David was an amazing tour guide and he spoke to us the history of all the sites as well as bringing us to all our check points on time. He was taking care of the group well especially during the glacier hike. Lots of places visited and he included appropriate rest stops during the way!

Christina is a wonderful tour guide. The plan is well communicated throughout the day, and she’s very attentive. We enjoyed the trip and would highly recommended it
