South Coast: ATV Quad Bike 2-Hour Safari

1. South Coast: ATV Quad Bike 2-Hour Safari

The adventure starts with a short safety briefing on how to operate the ATVs. When everyone is ready, it's take-off time, when you'll head for the majestic black sand plains of Sólheimasandur. Cross this desert-like landscape and stop by the famous DC3 plane that crashed on the sands in 1973. The guide will lead the group further over the sands to the spectacular coastline to witness views of the surrounding area. From the beach, see Dyrhólaey peninsula, the southernmost tip of Iceland. Looking inland, you can see the marvelous Mýrdalsjökull glacier in the distance. Heading back over the sands and following the Jökulsá river, your adventure will conclude as you cross a river to enter a stunning mountain valley.

From Reykjavik: South Coast and Black Beach ATV Ride

2. From Reykjavik: South Coast and Black Beach ATV Ride

Ride a powerful ATV over a large, black, volcanic beach, walk behind the thundering veil of water at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and take in the incredible view over Iceland's South Coast from the top of the cascade Skógafoss on this fantastic day tour.  After being picked up in the morning or meeting up with your guide at Reykjavík Terminal, head to Iceland's South Coast, famous for its dramatic coastline and cascading waterfalls. Your first stop is the black desert of Sólheimasandur, in the shadow of Eyjafjallajökull glacier, where you'll swap the bus for a powerful ATV quad-bike.  After traversing the stark, black beaches of the Island's South Coast on your ATV bike, make your way to the DC3 plane wreck from 1973, recently seen in Justin Bieber's music video and photo shoots.  By looking northwards and inland, the Mýrdalsjökull glacier rises majestically. At the same time, to the south, sense the raw power of the enormous Atlantic waves crashing onto the shore. Once back on the bus, continue your journey and visit an iconic waterfall duo: Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.  The former falls from heights of 60-meters, and a staircase next to it will lead you to unbelievable views of the South Coast and Iceland's interior. Seljalandsfoss is a narrower cascade that falls over a concave cliff, making it possible to encircle the stream of water fully.

This tour is the most popular sightseeing tour in Iceland and a must-see for any first-time visitor to the country. You’ll see Þingvellir National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Þingvellir is the national shrine of Iceland, the birthplace of the nation, and the country’s top historical attraction. It is the only place in the world where tectonic plates can be seen above sea level. Next, you’ll visit the Geysir hot spring area. The entire area is on top of a vast, geothermal field dotted with bubbling, multicolored mud pools, hissing steam vents, hot and cold springs, warm streams, and primitive plants. This is where you’ll see the original geyser, after which all others were named. Geysir is dormant most of the time but its successor, Strokkur, erupts every 10 minutes or so and its white column of boiling water can reach heights of 20-30 meters. A few minutes’ drive away is the Gullfoss (Golden Falls) Waterfall. Marvel at the white water thundering down a 32-meter drop into an impressive canyon. What people are saying about Southern Region, Iceland

The driver, Gregor and the guide, Bo, were very knowledgeable, giving us plenty of information at each point of interest. The ATV part was an exhilarating tour across black volcanic beaches, the tour guides were excellent and very knowledgeable of the area. Even though the weather on the day was excellent the ground conditions, we had a lot of snow the previous days, made some of the tracks impassable and the guides had to improvise on the route. It made the trip a bit more of an adventure, we had to dig out the ATVs several times, so be prepared to muck in if necessary.

Great tour, guide was awesome! As it had snowed quite a bit we were warned that the conditions were not optimal for a buggy tour but we decided to go anyways. Had a blast flying through snowdrifts and around the trails. Ultimately the guide's buggy got stuck in a drift too deep to make it through and we spent some time winching it out, laughing the entire time. These guys run a great tour but this is an outdoor adventure and may not go exactly as the brochure describes. Keep an open mind and you will have a great time!

We booked in for the ATV Quad bike safari but unfortunately due to the weather we were told that it wasn't possible. BUT the amazing people at Icelandic Mountain Guides gladly offered a FREE upgrade to their Vik: Mýrdalsjökull Snowmobile Adventure which was amazing! The ATV Quad bike adventure looked like it would have been great but this was definitely a very welcome upgrade! My partner and I would 100% recommend booking anything with this great company!

This is such an amazing adventure. We are a family of gran, grandad, mum, dad and 2 children aged 10and 8. It was a vey cold day for our trip but once in our suits and helmets we were fine apart from our thumbs (wear gloves). Anthony our English speaking guide explained many interesting things to us and gave us info on the crashed plane. We had such a great time - Thanks for everything Anthony . You must experience this adventure.

There were 6 of us, age range from 40 to 60. We didn’t realize they would provide us with a snow suit and boots. That would have been nice to know since we lugged boots and snow pants from home. The guides for the ATV ride were great. Our tour bus guy was wonderful and knowledgeable. My opinion, it’s only way to see the black beach!!
