Edinburgh: Ghost Hunt City Exploration Game

1. Edinburgh: Ghost Hunt City Exploration Game

Be led on an exciting self-guided tour around Edinburgh while playing a mobile-based quest with your friends and family. See many of Edinburgh’s most famous attractions and go on a journey through some of the city’s most haunted places. Download the app, go to the starting point, and begin the adventure. Follow clues and visit ghostly locations including Greyfriars Kirkyard, the site of the Nor’ Loch and West Bow, and sites where public executions were held. Unlock secrets about the places you visit as you solve puzzles and guess the answers. Learn about the Scottish Witch Hunts and the Burke and Hare murders and view the hall containing a book made of William Burke’s flesh. Use the clues to lead you from one site to another. Each clue provides you with exact directions so you won't need a map, GPS, or guide. Complete the tour in about 1.5 hours, however, there’s no time limit, allowing you to go at your own pace. Play as a group or split into smaller groups/teams and compete against the others. Each person can also play on their own, separate from the group, and meet the group at the end of the tour. Take part in a special Halloween event on October 30 featuring live actors. Wear your best costume to win a contest with prizes such as a $1000 GetYourGuide gift card, a (real) coffin, and much more.

Edinburgh's Royal Mile: A Self-Guided Audio Tour

2. Edinburgh's Royal Mile: A Self-Guided Audio Tour

Embark on a tour of Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile with an audio tour available on your smartphone. Enjoy 14 stories narrated by radio actor James Bryce in his charming Scottish lilt and see highlights, including the Lawnmarket and Mercat Cross. After installing your app, begin at the top of Castlehill next to the Witches Well and hear about Edinburgh Castle’s early days, when a series of infamous witch burnings took place here. Amble down all four sections of the Royal Mile: Castlehill, Lawnmarket, the High Street, and the old burgh of Canongate. Stroll around St. Giles Cathedral, home to the Old Tolbooth, the Heart of Midlothian mosaic, and a statue of Charles II. As you travel the length of the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, see the former residence of the gentleman robber, Deacon Brodie, the inspiration behind Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Hear about historical figures, such as John Knox and Mary Queen of Scots, and listen to tales about the barbaric punishments of the 1600s. Uncover the deeds that took place in the shadows of the Mercat Cross and see Netherbow Port, once the main gate between Edinburgh and Canongate.

A fun tour which gives a lot of interesting insights into the vast history Edinburgh has to offer! The puzzles are relatively clever and it feels great to solve them on your own (but don’t feel bad if you have to use one or two of the hints). You should definitely play it at night to give it the extra kick and by that you also avoid the crowds a little more.

Great fun, took us to parts of Edinburgh we had not seen before but still close to the centre, challenges were the right level for us and the game provided good information along the way!! Would highly recommend!

We had so much fun on our self guided tour! We did it in the evening to make it more atmospheric and really enjoyed ourselves while learning a lot of interesting stories about Edinburgh’s brutal past.

My son and I used our game to explore a little more of Edinburgh on our own. We had a good time and saw things and places that we would not have seen otherwise.

Good fun and interesting self guided tours with some challenges to get you thinking.
