Þórsmörk ( Thorsmork valley ) private Super Jeep

9. Þórsmörk ( Thorsmork valley ) private Super Jeep

The destination of the day is Þórsmörk – English spelling Thorsmork, the “Woods of Thor the Thundergod”. It's where the Icelanders traditionally go themselves to get away from it all. Guarding Þórsmörk nature reserve from unwanted traffic are several streams and glacial rivers cutting the rough track. Crossing requires caution. And specially modified vehicles of course. The first highlight of the day is the powerfully beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a good 60 meters of constant rush. Conditions permitting, how about a walk around it – yes, you can go behind Seljalandsfoss. Soon after the road starts disintegrating and nature takes over your senses. Bordering Þórsmörk nature reserve to the south is the famously ash-spewing volcano Eyjafjallajökull, topped by glacial ice and snow. Amongst numerous places of interest on our route is the Gígjökull glacier lagoon which is actually off the maps now. In 2010 it disappeared under volcanic rubble in a catastrophic flood of glacial melt and debris, caused by the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Where we go in the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve depends from day to day on weather and other conditions, but canyons, woodlands and caves are ideal settings for short walks.

This tour was honestly fantastic!! A serious must when visiting Iceland. It is a long day but so worth it. This was our last day in Iceland and it was our favourite. We were worried about seeing everything in daylight as there is only a few hours in the winter but it is organised so well. The waterfalls were amazing, the Glacier wow and the black beach was beautiful. We also got stuck in the snow for an hour and that experience was quite funny- everyone got out of the bus to dig it out and push. Mia was great, she even pointed out the northern lights (which we hadn’t seen all trip) and stopped the bus. Ending the day in the sky garden was out of this world, such a lovely place, beer in hand, warm and with the northern lights above us!!! Just perfect.

This tour is a must, although we had a few problems… bus getting stuck in the snow. It was still amazing! It would’ve been better to get longer in the Sky Lagoon but due to weather the tour overrun and and we didn’t get as long as we would’ve wanted. Karolina the guide was very good and informative. Would highly recommend this tour to others! The black sand beach is amazing.

We went on the south coast and sky lagoon tour on Monday 13th February. Alan was our guide, he was brilliant, his knowledge on the history of Iceland was amazing, he also gave tips of where to eat in Reykjavik. We had a fantastic day despite the weather!

Tour guide did absolutely everything possible to make sure we saw everything with the terrible snow conditions. It couldn’t have been any better and I couldn’t recommend this company any higher.

Great tour. Highly recommend especially to end it at Sky Lagoon!
