This is a special insight into the activities that happen only behind closed doors in an Ochaya with customers who pay millions of yen to be entertained by Geishas. We met Nami-san and her English speaking assistant in their studio in Omori area. They proceeded to show us the special dances and games they would use in entertaining guests. Everything - including booklets and the dances - were explained in English for foreigners. If you’re curious about the Geisha art & culture they embody, this visit is a must. This is a dying trade and no more than 1000 Geishas exist in all Japan. The studio is small and so book early. Wear socks as the studio has tatami flooring but perfectly air conditioned for the summer months. Allow yourself a little more time to find the Ochaya. Google map worked perfectly for us.
Amanda was incredibly knowledgeable. Although born and raised in Canada, she might as well have been Japanese given the nuance of her understanding of the culture. Was a pleasure to be on her tour and I would recommend it to anyone who visits.
The tour was insightful with some hidden Architecture that architects would appreciate. Hal was amazing, she explained the story behind the building very well. Anyone who is passionate about architecture should try this tour.
Tour of temple area, as well as visiting an izakaya, sake bar, and Tokyo's oldest bar. This tour would be better if it spent less time in the temple area and more time sharing culture/history through Japanese food.
The ticket bought via get online is cheaper than buy at entrance. Good to buy online advance :) Need to check the shuttle bus/local bus schedule if you don’t drive. Only one or two buses per hour.
