Full description
Meet your guide at Tokyo station in the morning and travel in the van to the Fukushima area, where you will break for lunch. Drive to Namie, the abandoned town worst affected by the March 2011 tsunami and the resulting disaster at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Listen to your guide as they explain how it happened. Learn about the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan and how it caused the tsunami.
Witness the scale of devastation left behind by the powerful wave, which reached 40.5 meters and traveled up to 10 kilometers inland. Understand the magnitude of loss that this area has faced: the tsunami alone claimed the lives of 15,000 people and 2,500 are still missing. Observe the catastrophic effects of natural and human disasters, and gain perspective in your own life through this eye-opening tour.
Then, feel hopeful as you pass by the town of Tomioka and meet its inhabitants, who are trying to reconstruct their community. Listen compassionately to their stories and their plans for the future, and be inspired by their strength. This tour finishes at Iwaki Station in Fukushima prefecture at around 5:45 PM. If you would like to go back to Tokyo, you can take the Hitachi Express Train which arrives at Tokyo Station by about 9 PM.
