Venice: Traveling Opera in a Historic Palace on Grand Canal

1. Venice: Traveling Opera in a Historic Palace on Grand Canal

Experience Italian Opera in one of the most important Venetian-Gothic style palaces in Venice, Palazzo Barbarigo-Minotto. Within this historical venue, an innovative approach to opera has been conceived, with a formula that focuses on the interaction between the singers, the musicians, and the audience. This gives spectators the feeling of living Opera ‘from the inside’. This sensation is amplified by the clever 360-degree use of the ‘stage’ and by having the guests move through 3 different rooms within the Palazzo, one for each act of the show. The whole setting changes, not just the background. Reviving a tradition dating back to the late 1800s, this reimagining is brought to life by some of the finest lyrical voices, accompanied by a talented small group of strings and a piano: a virtuoso ensemble who performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. Opera offered: • La Traviata - Melodrama in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi (Mon - Tue - Thu - Sat) • Il Barbiere di Siviglia - Light-hearted melodrama in two acts by Gioachino Rossini (Wed - Sun) • Rigoletto - Intense drama about love and vengeance by Giuseppe Verdi (Fri)

What people are saying about Venice

Lively production of comic opera made accessible to kids, those not familiar w/opera or traveling format. Italian speakers had advantage of understanding libretto & I envied them but reading synopsis beforehand aided in refamiliarizing myself w/gist of the plot. My only criticism & it’s big one: practically entire production delivered in the dark. Candlelight not enough to illuminate the players & completely detracted from what could have been superb experience. As performer myself I felt what a shame it was they were working so hard, only for many character interactions, facial expressions, business with props etc was totally lost. They may as well have done staged reading in modern dress & not bothered w/makeup costumes wigs corsets etc. Thoroughly enjoyed performances, voices well matched, characters fleshed out as much as one can in farce! If in Venice longer would return for other operas, only well lit ones.

This concert was worth every euro— from the beginning stroke of the violinists bow to the very last note. The musicians were fabulously entertaining and the ambiance of the church with its wonderful acoustics and beautiful paintings, architectural details, and antique instruments on display, made the night magical. I received two CDs as a surprise gift to take this beautiful music home with me…a real treasure, indeed.

Beautiful artistic experience in an old Venetian palace. Not a classic opera performance, since the stage and the public were in the same space, it was like taking part to the action as silent witnesses.

A very enjoyable concert in great venue, more than worth the time and money

Very intimate and perfect way to introduce our children to opera.
