Full description
Your guided tour of the Doge’s Palace begins at Saint Mark’s Square, entering the palace from the ornate, bright courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale. Entering a narrow door on the ground floor, you’ll immediately find yourself in the Pozzi, a collection of small, damp cells that once housed prisoners. Take note of the preserved writing and carving on the walls as you head towards the ornate Square Atrium. From there, pass through to the ornate Chamber of the Secret Chancellery, whose walls are lined with secret compartments containing documents pertaining to the Venetian magistrate. Continue into the Chamber of Torment, where your guide will explain the disturbing practices of torture in Venice, as well as when it was abolished. From there, continue into another set of cells, reserved for political prisoners, called the Piombi.  The Piombi leads directly under the roof of the attic, where there are ornamental cases containing artifacts and weapons from the 16th century. From the attic, head down into the final room of the tour, the Chamber of the Inquisitors, where a much-feared magistrate was set up in 1539 to protect state secrets.
