Cape Town: 3-Hour Malay Cooking Class & Lunch in Bo-Kaap

8. Cape Town: 3-Hour Malay Cooking Class & Lunch in Bo-Kaap

A local food-lover, Faldela Tolker, will be waiting to greet you on the doorstep of her neat, lilac-colored house. She’ll welcome you into her kitchen where a large metal pot simmers on the stove, emitting a spicy aroma. Chef Faldela conducts cooking classes in her home in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town. The food cooked in this predominantly Muslin neighborhood is as piquant as the hot pink and burnt-orange painted houses that rise gently up the lower slopes of Signal Hill, part of Table Mountain. Unique to the Western Cape of South Africa, Cape Malay cuisine fuses African tradition with that of Malaysian and Indonesian slaves, brought over by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries. A blend of spices — ginger, fennel, star anise, tamarind, and, most importantly, turmeric — gives the food a distinct aromatic quality. Stews, roasts, and sauce-heavy curries are popular in Malay cuisine, as are meat patties, milk, and bread puddings.

Cape Town: Sunset Champagne Cruise and 3-Course Dinner

9. Cape Town: Sunset Champagne Cruise and 3-Course Dinner

Join a 90-minute sunset cruise from Cape Town and watch the Atlantic Ocean stretching away from the Table Mountain range as the sun goes down. Watch the sea while sipping on local sparkling wine. After the cruise, enjoy a 3-course meal at a sea-facing restaurant. The sailboats Esperance and Serenity One follow the wind for this cruise, and therefore the destination is dependent on the weather at the time of the cruise. Your captain will let you know before departure your expected direction, but typical Cape Town summer wind blows from the southeast. First, leave the harbor and sail across Table Bay towards Milnerton Lighthouse, returning to the protection of Granger Bay in the lee of Table Mountain to watch the sunset, and then motor back to the waterfront. After building an appetite at sea, you then have a short stroll through the waterfront to the restaurant where you can enjoy your meal (each restaurant has a different menu). Enjoy local fare at the City Grill or dine in the opulent setting of Sevruga, featuring exquisite panoramic views of the harbor and newly renovated interior with intimate seating. Both options will offer a perfect post-cruise culinary treat. Possible Weather Variations:  During inclement weather, when the seas are running too high, or the wind is too strong, the tour destination will be Cape Town Harbour instead of Table Bay. You will be able to enjoy a Harbour Lights Cruise. This cruise offers a perfect alternative offering magical views of Table Mountain and the lights of Cape Town and the harbor in the evening. In extreme conditions, the skipper will take every aspect into account, and may cancel the tour to ensure the safety of the passengers.

Super easy communication, their team was open to chatting via WhatsApp due to a few shifts and plan because of weather concerns (they are transparent about this in the activity description). We shifted our date twice, but the day we finally went everything went off without a hitch. Beautiful sunny day, super safe crew, and very affordable photos and videos for memories. The only negative I'd have to say is that the GoPro they were using cut out twice during my flight, so I had a bit limited video. However still enjoyed the experience, and would recommend for others to do it.

Eye opening experience on how the 3/4 of the population still lives in Cape Town. Walk tour around the slams (so-called townships) with a local guide is priceless! And the best part- absolutely safe - no beggars, no kids following you and asking for anything, nothing dangerous at all! Highly recommended tour if you want not only see the glamorous of the waterfront but glance at the other part of the everyday lives of a regular, ‘less fortunate’ people of the mother town.

Learning about the history and origin of diamonds was an eye-opening experience. Walking through the workshop and seeing the work being done, seeing different types of diamonds, learning about cuts and colours and also fitting on my favorite pieces. This is a turn worth taking while in Cape Town

the trip was exceptional and our guide Mandela has a good sense of humor coupled to being very knowledgeable. we saw all the game promised and more. definitely worth every penny spent.

Great experience - guide on time and good drop off
