Full description
Make your way to the Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal, a five-minute drive from Darwin CBD, then cruise over to Bathurst Island, one of the Tiwi Islands. Upon arrival, meet your guide and the modern-day Aboriginal community of Wurrumiyanga. Visit the onsite museum and see the many displays of traditional art that depict the Tiwi ‘dreamtime’ stories. Stop by the Early Mission Precinct with its Tiwi-style Catholic Church, and learn how the Tiwi people have blended their culture with Christianity. Later, spend some time with the Tiwi ladies while they work on their weaving and painting. Then, watch the ladies demonstrate a totem dance and perform a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors.  Once you’ve worked up a bit of an appetite, enjoy a tasty lunch, served with local billy tea and damper. After lunch there’s time to see more of the community’s arts and crafts and have the opportunity to purchase some. Finally, learn about the complex rituals associated with the Pukamani (burial ceremony), before being taken back to the ferry port for your return to Darwin.

It was a life experience spending the day with the Tiwi people, learning about their history, culture and their wonderful outlook on life. The tour guides were all so informative, intelligent and friendly. We spent most of our time with Fred (one of Tiwi’s best AFL legends… according to Fred!) who is a great communicator, telling us some of the sad, funny and proud stories of the Tiwi people. However the highlight of the day was meeting and talking with Bernard, who is an Tiwi icon. 82 years young, grandfather of 32, social reformer and ex-schoolteacher. His stories, vision for the Tiwi people and his sense of humour blew us away.

A nice experience with very friendly local guides. Some very interesting stories from the guides about the history of the islands, and some of their cultural practices. Morning tea and lunch were a nice inclusion. Ferry check-in was a bit messy. Having 2 tour groups with only one bus was a bit wierd too. Being in the 2nd group, we missed what seemed like a very interesting chat with an elder at the Tiwi Tours base. Would have liked more time at the museum too as it had loads of interesting information. Overall a good experience and I'm glad to have done it, but feel there were too many people on the tour given the price.
