Discover a monument that is a marvel of design, covering a total surface area of around 2,500 square meters, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and originally featuring 504 Buddha statues. Built between AD 780 and 840 during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty, the temple's design in Gupta architecture reflects India's influence on the region. However, there are enough indigenous scenes and elements incorporated to make Borobudur uniquely Indonesian. The temple has remained strong even through ten centuries of neglect. In the 1970s, the Indonesian Government and UNESCO worked together to restore Borobudur to its former majesty. The history is great, and the temple is massive. The only issue I had was so many pictures show the stupas with people taking pictures. They are not allowing people to walk around on the top anymore, and you can barely see the stupas. They said the problem is the temple is so heavy and the additional weight of hundreds of people are causing the temple to sink. They are planning to allow a very small amount of people to go up top during dry season for an extra charge. The park surrounding the temple is well maintained and pretty. The fact that you can touch a piece of history from 830a.d. is pretty amazing.

This was my third tour of the day, as I’d done the Borobudur Sunrise tour in the morning and had already been to Prambanan itself immediately prior to the Ramayana show. Widi, my guide for all 3, was really great - he had loads of useful information about Java, about the temples and about Ramayana, so everything I did and saw always bad genuine context around it. The ballet itself was entertaining and interesting - there was a screen showing a summary of what was happening in the story as well - it was a real spectacle and really good value.

Guide was prompt and friendly. The Ballet was a good rendition of the story of Ram and Sri Lanka. I thought it might get boring after a while, but it actually was pretty good teh whole way through. The projection of the story on the wall was a good addition.

Too bad you can't go up and only walk around it. They only tell you that when you have paid (rascals) Despite that worth it and impressive.

The driver was punctual and looked after us very well for the evening.
