York: 1-Hour Small Group Evening Walking Tour

1. York: 1-Hour Small Group Evening Walking Tour

Early evening is the most atmospheric time to experience York, the shops have closed, the tourist hordes have departed, the ancient streets lie at your disposal. This hour-long walking tour is for anyone seeking a concise, informal and entertaining introduction to York in the company of an expert local guide. Discover why the Minster is known as a Minster rather than a cathedral, why all the streets in York are called Gates and all the gates are called Bars. Start your tour in Exhibition Square, and see 2000 years of history simply by turning in a circle. Take in all the must-see sights including the Minster, the medieval walls and the Shambles, the inspiration for Diagon Alley. Take the opportunity to enter the maze of ancient cut-throughs and back-passages, or Snickelways as they are known locally.  Although this isn't a ghost tour there are plenty of gruesome true stories to be heard. By the end of the walk you will be ready for your dinner reservation having tasted the full flavour of a city which still has Viking mud on its boots and a tang of cocoa in the air.

I have just enjoyed a wonderful and informative tour led by Sarah, who's knowledge of York and English history is amazing! It was a very small group (just 3 in total) and it meant that we got the opportunity to ask questions and share conversations within the group. Having seen another tour of over 30 people I know I made the right choice in picking a small group. The pace was relaxed, the conversations interesting and Sarah so engaging in how she shared her knowledge. A superb way to spend a good hour on my first evening in the city.

We had an excellent time getting a more customized tour trailered for our interests, as we were the only ones in our group. He was great with our kids and answered all their questions. Such a pretty hike up to Arthur’s Seat. Highly recommend this tour. Go at the beginning of your stay to get suggestions for the rest of your trip.

We absolutely loved our tour with (Sarah?)! We had a wonderful time learning about the history of York. We lucked out and had the tour all to ourselves and were so appreciative that it wasn't cancelled. We also appreciated her restaurant recommendations. It gave us some great ideas for eating.

Brilliant Tour, cannot recommend enough. Our guide Sarah had such an enthusiasm for local history it was infectious. She was also very gracious in answering our many questions. We learnt a lot in an hour!

Alfred was a very informative and friendly guide which started off our York visit very nicely.
